What is Konosuba?

Konosuba is a Japanese light novel series written by Natsume Akatsuki. The series follows Kazuma Satō, a hikikomori who is sent to another world with the goddess Aqua after drowning in a water park. Aqua orders Kazuma to bring her back home, but upon learning that Aqua will leave him if he does so, Kazuma instead chooses to become her default adventurer and stays in the other world. Joining Kazuma are the archwizard Megumin, who can only cast one explosive spell per day and tries to make the most out of it; the crusader Darkness, whose attack style revolves around taking damage in order to deal it; and the animal-eared thief Aqua’s self-proclaimed servant and masochist demon girl named Megumin. The novels have been illustrated by Kurone Mishima since July 2014. They have been published by Kadokawa Shoten under their Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko label since October 2013 and have been collected into twelve volumes as of September 2020.

The setting of Konosuba

Konosuba is set in a fictional Japan that was transported to another world. The anime follows the story of Kazuma Satou, a high schooler who died and was sent to a fantasy world with goddess Aqua. Aqua gives Kazuma the option of being resurrected in this new world with any one thing he chooses. After much contemplation, he chooses Aqua herself hoping that she would help him defeat the Demon King. However, upon his resurrection, he quickly realizes that Aqua is completely useless and only knows how to spend money. Despite this, Kazuma still accompanies Aqua on her journey to defeat the Demon King while also picking up two other party members along the way, the busty mage Megumin and the masochistic knight Darkness.

Themes in Konosuba

While the KonoSuba movie does not adapt any volumes of the light novels, it does cover various themes from them. Familiar elements such as the setting and characters are used, but there are also new plot elements unique to the film.

Some of the themes present in the movie include: Kazuma and Aqua’s relationship, Aqua’s goal to become a goddess, Megumin’s self-sacrificing nature, Darkness’ masochism, and more.

Konosuba’s reception

Konosuba has been generally well-received, with its humor and characters being praised. However, the anime has been criticized for its slow pacing and lack of development of the main plot.
